7 Fun family things to do in NYC

Family trip to New York City? Yes, most certainly yes!

The most amazing thing about NYC is that it appeals to all ages as there’s just so much to do and see.

From interactive museums to iconic Broadway shows and to exploring the great outdoors, the city will surely spark your child’s curiosity and enthusiasm for travel and adventure.

So, if or when you decide to plan your dream family break to one of the most hectic but enjoyable cities in the world, here’s a recommended list of seven fun and unforgettable activities to enjoy as a family in New York City. (In no particular order)

1. The lights and billboards

It’s all free! And they’re everywhere, You just can’t miss them! New York’s energy and attractions never disappoint. The children were amazed by the city’s dazzling skyline of skyscrapers, the abundance of lights and vibrant LED billboards.

It’s all eye catching, exciting and entertaining for children. Of course, the lights are particularly spectacular after daylight, but do bear in mind your family safety when venturing out at night with young children and in such crowded spaces.

2. Central Park

With kids is a must. It’s huge, and you could easily spend the whole day there. Whether you’re travelling with toddlers or teenagers, the park offers a pleasant mix of fun and adventure with space to run around, play and explore.

There are 21 playgrounds to choose from and plenty of lakes and ponds including the beautiful Bethesda Fountain- one of the largest fountains in New York.

And don’t forget to make a stop at the charming Central Park Zoo! It’s packed with a diverse array of animals from snow leopards to sea lions. Our favourite were the penguins in the polar circle exhibit. They looked happy and settled in their calm and chilled surroundings.

3. M&M’S Store (Times Square)

The M&M’s store is worth a visit. It’s colourful and exciting for children with three floors filled with apparel, souvenirs and of course, chocolate.

The options to buy are great because you could choose from a self-selected pick ‘n’ mix bag for as little as 3 dollars. I doubt you’ll be walking out empty handed.

I reckon an M&M’s hot chocolate cafe would make a wonderful addition to this megastore!

4. Broadway

There’s nothing better than a family-friendly musical. We enjoyed two timeless classics, Aladdin and the Lion King (on two separate visits to NY)  The best option would probably be to prebook your tickets to avoid any long queues.

Most shows require children to be at least four-years-old but check specific show recommendations. The matinee shows worked best for us and felt much safer commuting to and from with children during the day.

5. Madame Tussauds

Located in the heart of NYC you’ll enjoy multiple floors of endless fun as a family. Introduce your little ones to some familiar life-like wax characters, from pop stars to animated characters and superheroes.

My youngest was scared of some of the wax figures. He kept his eyes closed while I cautiously ushered him around. Otherwise, a great place to meet the star you’d probably never meet and greet in reality!

6. The Statue of Liberty

Visting this iconic site is a mini trip in itself.

You can catch the ferry ride from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan and it’s about a 15-minute ride each way.

Theres’s airport-style security screening before boarding, but once you’re all set enjoy the ride and listen out for the crowd’s excitement as the statue emerges in the distance against the skyline.

Remember to pack plenty of snacks. Once on the island there’s space to roam about freely and to even enjoy a picnic.

And if you’re feeling energetic and adventurous why not climb the 215 steps, that’s about 10 levels to climb to the top of the pedestal. We made it halfway!

7. Sloomoo Institute

Who said slime was for kids! I didn’t expect to have so much fun here, but it really was one of the best family moments in NYC.

A warm welcome from staff encouraged us to all get involved in the fun and excitement of slime making.

With so many colourful vibrant visuals, satisfying textures and pleasant scents, this activity kept us fully engaged and entertained during our visit. And we got to leave with our very own made and personalised slime.

It’s a little pricey so make the most of your time here, take part in all the activities and take your time to explore all there is on offer and most of all have fun!

There’s plenty more to explore in NYC as a family, but the truth is it can be very exhausting and expensive!

So be realistic with your schedule, factor in lunch and even those much-needed loo breaks.

Leaving out early and planning well ahead is highly recommended. Pack snacks and if possible, sandwiches and a change of spare clothes- as long days out could get messy and untidy.

Enjoy! And don’t forget to let us know your favourite fun family hotspots in NYC.
