Why NYC was the perfect birthday destination with my family

Family trip to New York City? Yes, most certainly Yes! It’s a wonderful destination to explore as a family.

Having recently turned forty-one, and if I go by the age-old adage of life begins at 40, it truly had for me! As my birthday weekend commenced, I reflected on some of the lessons I had absorbed over the preceding years, and I felt truly honoured and grateful. So, to celebrate this landmark-defining moment, i decided on a weekend trip to New York City as a family.

Turning forty was a big deal, but turning forty-one felt like an even bigger deal! with my feet firmly in the forties and having savoured some of the flavours of midlife, from my first burgeoning grey strand of hair to some newly felt aches and pains- although uncertain if age related.

Nevertheless, I spent the entire 12 months of being forty highly motivated, full of joy, optimism and excitement about life, remaining focused and living it to my fullest with loved ones. And with travelling being at the top of my life begins at 40 agenda, I did as much as time and funds would permit.

And while travelling with a young family is no smooth ride as there’s always so much to consider, from the destination choice to the essential items you need to pack, it certainly is one of the most rewarding adventures you could fulfil as a family.

I like to think of each trip as a team building exercise where ideas are shared and listened to, goals set and met, and success is achieved happily. For the children, it’s so important for them to experience different cultures, and to broaden their knowledge and understanding of different geographical locations away from the realms of their home, and this is what we endeavour to do on each trip.

The most amazing thing about NYC is that is appeals to all ages, so everyone was happy! There’s just so much to do and see in this city, with interests ranging from interactive museums, iconic Broadway shows to exploring the great outdoors, the city will surely spark your little one’s curiosity and enthusiasm for travel and adventure.

So, if or when you decide to plan your dream family break to one of the greatest cities in the world, here’s a list of our top five fun and unforgettable activities to do with kids in NYC.

1. The lights and billboards

You just can’t miss them! New Yorks energy and attractions never disappoint. The children will be amazed by the cities dazzling skyline of skyscrapers, an abundance of lights and colourful glitzy billboards. It’s all eye catching, exciting and entertaining for children. Of course, the lights are particularly spectacular in the dark, but please bear in mind your family’s safety when travelling out at night with young children.

2. Central Park

With kids is a must. It’s huge and you could easily spend the whole day there. Whether you’re travelling with toddlers or older children the park offers a pleasant mix of fun and adventure with space to run around, play and explore. There are 21 playgrounds to choose from and plenty of lakes and ponds including the beautiful Bethesda Fountain-one of the largest fountains in NY. And don’t forget to make a stop at the charming Central Park Zoo that’s packed with a diverse array of animals from snow lions to sea leopards.

3. Broadway

There’s nothing better than a family-friendly musical. We enjoyed two pre-booked shows-Aladdin and the lion king – and they were just fantastic! The best option would probably be to prebook your tickets to avoid any long queues. Most shows require children to be at least 4 but check specific show recommendations. I’d consider a matinee show as they are often better for younger children.

4. Madame Tussauds

Located in the heart of NYC you’ll enjoy multiple floors of endless fun as a family. Introduce your little ones to some familiar life-like wax characters, from pop stars to animated characters and superheroes.

5. The Statue of Liberty

You can’t go to New York and skip this iconic site. Watch as your little one’s beam from ear to ear as they enjoy the ferry ride to Liberty Island and the excitement as they spot lady Liberty. Remember to pack plenty of snacks. Once on the island there’s space to roam about freely and to even enjoy a picnic. And if you’re feeling energetic and adventurous why not climb the 215 steps, that’s about 10 stories to climb to the top of the pedestal! We made it halfway!

Have fun!
