This article aims to share with you 10 top tips on the best ways to keep safe in NYC and some interesting ideas on how to have fun with your little ones while in New York City.
1. The first rule of thumb is to AirTag your little ones. Purchase an AirTag/s and have it fully functional before you set off on your travels. An AirTag is an easily attachable keyring like accessories that can be worn discreetly and safely. However, an AirTag does not prevent you from losing your child but in the worst-case scenario an active AirTag could offer you some comfort and knowledge in locating your lost child.
2. Before heading out, talk to your children about the plans for the day, explain to them that you will be going someone busy and that it’s very important they always stay with you and do not wander off. Give them clear instructions as to what to do if they become separated from you, for example they could go to a nearby shop (ideally a main store and not a back street quiet shop) and ask for help from someone who works in the shop, arm your child/ren with your contact number so they could use the phone to call you directly.
It’s important that they do not leave the safe location until you are reunited. Approaching a police officer is another good idea, although but we didn’t see any out and about in busy locations like Times Square!
3. The crowded streets can feel intimidating to you but try hard to stay focused when out and about in busy areas such as Times Square. People will be approaching you from all different directions, offering you services and products for sale, be firm with a polite no thanks, that’s if you’re not interested.
There’s so such much to look at, including intriguing shops, lights and cool merchandise that you can become easily distracted and lose your bearings, so try to plan your route before heading out and stick to it. Take a note of landmarks and that will help you navigate back to your hotel with ease.
4. To avoided being pickpocketed in New York City, keep all personal belongings and valuables hidden and close by in a side bag or pouch making it only accessible to yourself. Carry only what you may need for the day and lock other forms of ID in a hotel safe.
5. All NYC taxicabs are clearly identifiable and in abundance, so there’s no need to get into an unmarked vehicle. make the child/ren aware of the official yellow taxicabs that congest the streets of Manhattan. Other cab services like Lyft and Uber are also available but as they are not regulated by the NYC taxi and Limousine Commission, use them with caution.
6. Leave behind the dark clothing and accessories! Adorn your child/ren in brightly coloured clothes that can be spotted from a mile away. In cooler, colder weather a brightly coloured beanie hat for example would have more impact than a black one if your child runs ahead of you into a busy crowd. Reflective clothing is always beneficial too for those busy bustling locations.
7. For younger children who may not be able to recall your contact details, another great idea is to invest in an identity tag chain, that can be worn around the neck or simply placed in pocket. We did the for our daughter when we visited Disneyland some years back. It just allows for you to be contacted directly by an adult should the dreaded happen.
8. Do not, under no circumstances leave your child unattended, even if you are just checking out the new pumps your about to buy in the store mirror, always keep your little ones by your side.
9. Use a pushchair for toddlers when outdoors in busy areas. This would avoid your little one from wandering off to explore. The best pushchairs for travel fold to cabin size and can be easily manoeuvred and accessorised for maximum comfortability, so let your little one rest their legs while you remain reassured, they are safe and sound.
10. Hold hands with older children, crowded places may overwhelm young children so a firm hand grasp could offer some warm and comfort but also encourage your child to always stay with you.
Have fun! and remember…always enjoy your family time. It’s so precious x
